Irascibility makes the world go round

Youth

So today at karate, a student asked if we could turn on the radio.  He’s 12, and he wanted KISS 108.  I would rather stab myself in the eye than listen to that, so I put on what I thought was reasonable, WBCN (104.1).  He was clearly not enthused about it.

What befuddled me the most was that the White Stripes came on, ‘Icky Thump’ and he asked if we could listen to something other than metal.  Metal?  I’m not really sure the White Stripes would fall into that category.  The Beastie Boys (‘Girls’) came on a little later and he thought that was also metal.  I asked what he listened to and he said ‘hip-hop’ after which I incredulously told him that without the Beastie Boys (three Jews from New York), there would be no Eminem, nor any of the modern hip-hop of which he is a fan.

So the moral of the story is that I have entered the ‘get off my lawn’ portion of my life and no longer understand youth.
