However, is it not also the case that often it is the ideological manipulation of religion, sometimes for political ends, that is the real catalyst for tension and division, and at times even violence in society? -

I would really rather not hear any snarky comments about this, though they are there to be made.  It’s far too easy to mix up the actions of a faith with the actions of its adherents, especially the more radical ones in traditions we don’t understand.  In separating the two out and understanding that religion can be manipulated for political and violent ends by those who follow its tenets, I think we can have a far more fruitful discussion about religion’s role and responsibilities in today’s world.
